I know, I know. This will incontrovertibly attract a lot of hate from die-hard Dark Knight fans, but guess what? I'm one of those who thinks Nolan is the epitome of how to make a perfect superhero spectacle.

Or at least, I was until tonight.

This film will blow your mind. Quite literally, it is jam-packed with edge-of-your-seat action thrills and pure comedic gold. Don't be expecting a moody companion piece like that of Nolan's trilogy, or Man of Steel. It keeps more in touch with Avengers, although it's a lot funnier and really builds upon the upcoming Infinity Gauntlet arc.

The actors are incredible, matching the character developments, the dialogue and action sequences are spectacular and the visual effects should surely earn a nod come Oscar time, as I'd personally put them on par with those seen in the recent Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. The run length compliments the well-scripted pacing of the movie itself, whilst plenty of interesting secondary characters litter Guardians with an ensemble cast that has exceeded anything yet seen in the Marvel/DC movie worlds. I don't pertain to the DC versus Marvel argument, but this masterpiece alone has certainly put Marvel on the front foot in terms of cinema outings, far surpassing the very enjoyable Man of Steel and, I believe, edging out Nolan's trilogy and then some.

I thoroughly recommend this for any with a borderline sci-fi/superhero love, and advise you to remain for the tantalising post-credits scene, although many of the non-comic fans might not get the references.

Of the nearly 400 films being showcased at this year's Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), Denis Villeneuve's Sicario was the one film at the top of my 'Must See' list. Having premiered at this year's Cannes Film Festival where it went on to be nominated for the prestigious Palme D'Or, Sicario stars Emily Blunt, Joh Brolin and Benicio Del Toro as members of a government task force who attempt to apprehend a villainous drug lord.

Director Denis Villeneuve is on some kind of roll. His previous films – Polytechnique, Incendies and Prisoners – were all thought provoking character pieces offset by realistic and graphic depictions of violence. Sicario opens with just such a scene as Blunt's Kate Macer leads a rain on a Mexican drug house near Phoenix, Arizona and discovers dozens of executed victims packed into the walls. Audiences will have barely settled in their seats and scrunched on but a handful of popcorn kernels when the shocking revelation is revealed on screen.

From here, Macer is forced to work with Matt Graver (Josh Brolin) and Alejandro (Del Toro) who works as a sort of fixer on both sides of the border. Their work leads them to drug trafficker Fausto (Julio Cesar Cedillo) and the group then works to transport the criminal back across the border. Their journey will be met with many obstacles with shoot-outs at border crossings and a tense hunt and shoot inside a drug trafficking tunnel connecting the two countries.

The focus of Sicario (which is Mexican slang for 'hitman') is clearly on Blunt's lead character and Blunt is up to the task in being the smartest person in the room while also being the one most left in the dark as to the team's objectives. She will be continually conflicted by her male peers particularly their penchant for instigating or responding forcefully to appeared violence. The action settled between Macer's first-hand education thrust the film forward to a very satisfying and acceptable conclusion.

The supporting cast is equally engrossing particularly Del Toro who will be on screen for most all of the film's most memorable shots. Del Toro's character is clouded in mystery and unclear motives and Del Toro gives his best performance since Traffic.

Sicario was penned by Taylor Sheridan who played Deputy Chief Hale on FX's Sons of Anarchy. His take on the war on drugs and the violence and human costs that surround the battle are dead on target. The realism results in Sicario being hardly the crowd-pleaser. It is a bleak and grim film that might just be Villeneuve's best work to date.

The photography by Roger Deakins is stunning. Expect Deakins to garnish another Academy Award nomination for his efforts here to go with his work on The Shawshank Redemption and Skyfall.

Also worthy of note is the music by Jóhann Jóhannsson that grabs you by the balls while the action unfolds.

Sicario might be too bleak for Academy voters, but make no mistake of Sicario's impact and brilliance. It was on my 'Must See' list for a reason and did not disappoint. Easily the best film of the year so far.

There's something magical in how CRAZY BEAUTIFUL YOU delivers its teenage romantic tale. As it unfolds, this new KathNiel movie, bares no different skin, and unveils a familiar picture reminiscent of countless others belonging to its genre. Yet, it is through this familiarity, that the movie takes its greatest strengths. It's with its simplicity and honesty that the film is able to seamlessly hit its targets, and deliver its message with haunting resonance.

On moments where the story shreds its details, CRAZY BEAUTIFUL YOU comes across with piercing yet tangible truths about family and young love, and forgiveness and acceptance. There's these striking references to Mount Pinatubo's eruption--how it created an ambrosial beauty after an utterly horrendous disaster--and to Jackie's pictures--how it assumes heart when taken at newer perspectives--both of which rings across the path that our leads take on their way to maturity, and across the story's overall progression. On those moments, the scenery and music both play as key factors, for bringing the emotional capacity of the film to seismic levels.

There's no doubt that Kathryn and Daniel are central to the film's overwhelming charisma, as we see how their characters transform throughout the film, and plays in perfect accord with the story's lazy yet satisfying development. And against the backdrop of Pinatubo and dusty yet breathtaking landscape of the lahar-infested Aeta community of Tarukan, plus the mostly timely insertion of Starship's Nothing Gonna Stop Us Now, that KathNiel charm proves to be the biggest asset that this film has.

In the end, Crazy Beautiful You, triumphs in delivering its full capacity. In spite of its tiring formula, the film pays utmost attention to its details carefully and exquisitely, enough for it to completely shrug off its easily recognizable set-up. This is easily my top teen romantic movie of the year. I give the film 9/10 stars.

Last Knight taps into the fantasy sword and sandals genre. Its set in a fictional empire with a medieval style hierarchy of Emperors, nobles and knights.

The film has a samurai flavour too, with notions of honour and sacrifice for ones liege lord. The sets are excellent and the acting is fair. Where this film fails miserably is in the story telling department.

The enjoyable portions of this film take place in the first and last twenty or so minutes. What happens in between, can only be described as long winded and excruciatingly dull.

As a consequence, whilst I liked aspects of this film, I can in no way recommend it. Four out of ten from me.

John Wick had been out awhile and at first I had little interest in seeing it as, for me, Keanu Reeves is generally whatever the opposite of a selling point is. However I kept hearing about how this was a bit of a throw back of an action movie and upon reading the connection between the director and Keanu, I thought I would have to put aside my preconceived notions and give this movie a shot.

The movie had two ex-stunt men (one of which was Keanu Reeves' former stunt double) helming this film. This resulted in a lot of practical effects instead of heavy reliance on green screen. Also familiarity with Reeves likely left the directors with a base knowledge with how far they could push the star. This left the film's action scenes clean, realistic, to the point, and a hell of a lot of fun to watch.

If I was going to break down the film's format, well it is of the "semi-generic Punisher type, ex bad ass comes out of retirement to take on other bad asses" type variety. It was 75% Japanese yakuza film, 20% Film Noir, and 5% video game. One stylistic element that jumped out at me right away was the choice to go with a narrow scope of field for focus. At first I thought maybe this was the projector in the theater but then I realized it was a choice made for the film. Normally this would annoy me slightly, and I suppose still did, as I am a big fan of depth of field, mise–en–scènes set ups (Citizen Kane is one of my favorite films). I came to terms with the stylistic choice made for this film as it reminded me so much of Eastern influences, in this case it was reminiscent of Zen ink and brush compositions, where the sharpness lies in where the brush first touches down and the edges disappear into an almost mist like effect.

While Keanu sold the action pieces well, he wasn't asked to do too much to stretch his stoic emotional range, which is just what the film required. He was pretty much perfect for this part if I had been for some reason been asked to recast this film, I would be hard pressed to find a better fit. This would have been right up Jason Statham's alley, however there is nothing more he could have added to it. There was something quietly instance about Reeves that made you feel that he was one not to be trifled with. Statham will always remind me of the character he played in Snatch, which was not at all overly menacing or intimidating. Rather, if I had my choice of an alternative, I would delve further into the Japanese gangster genre and extract Chow Yun-fat. Reeves was 49 in this film and still convincing as an ass kicker. Chow Yun-fat would have been ten years older, but that would have further added to the realism of a retired hit man that is unwillingly dragged back into the 'business'.

Speaking of performances, this film was full of great character actors from the action genre and otherwise. One of these performances that I was not overly fond of was that of Alfie Allen. You probably know him as the dickless Theon Greyjoy. He worked in the part in that he was highly unlikable, however I was not sure which accent he was trying to commit to. This brings me to another flaw of the film. Many of the baddies simply did not measure up to be worthy of the John Wick challenge. A spoiled brat son of a crime boss nor the crime boss himself, an old man that the film gave no hint as to any physical prowess until the anticlimactic final battle gave any feeling that the fight would go any other direction except to a single minded John Wick killing stroke.

I highly recommend this film if you are a fan of good action. This easily ranks as one of the pure action movies of 2014. Judged as just a movie, it is simple in story structure, but what it does it does very well.

While the main message of the movie was about multi-cultural peace (probably what the world needs now), choreography was good (nothing less than expected from a J.C. movie), side jokes to make you giggle from this otherwise boring plot, nothing else about the movie was able to redeem it from it's cliché story progression and bad script.

1) The message about multicultural peace was smacked right in audience faces left, right, up, down from the beginning of the show. To make things worst, coupled with cheesy lines, it made a profound and wise motif seem plain cheesy, overly-simplified and lacked the depth it should have had.

2) Despite the strong development of major characters, minor/side characters were not grounded enough. Fickle change in beliefs by side characters (people of the Wild Geese Gate), once again, made the story look superficial and badly developed.

Unfortunately, great choreography, scene shots and strong casts could not save it from its draggy, underdeveloped plot and horrible script.
